Is Samsung working on a phone that can project Star Wars-like holograms?

Forget foldable displays, Samsung may be working on a smartphone display that can project holograms into the air that can be viewed from any angle and without requiring special glasses.

Forget foldable displays, Samsung may be working on a smartphone display that can project holograms into the air that can be viewed from any angle and without requiring special glasses.

According to a patent discovered by Letsgodigital, Samsung's display will use "a relay lens disposed at a front surface of the display comprises an array of micro lenses. The relay lens contains a spatial light modulator (SLM) with a filter. The SLM ensures that the hologram pattern is reproduced correctly, after which it is projected as a light beam out of the display. By using the intervention of light, a high-quality holographic image can be realized."

The patent further describes the operation of each individual micro lens, the filters and the operation of the light guide plate, so this might be more than just a concept and it sounds like Samsung may actually have a working prototype.
