Samsung said to produce LTPO TFT OLED displays for iPhone 13

Samsung Display will start producing low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED displays for Apple within the first half of the year.

With the iPhone 13 lineup on track to launch in late September, Samsung is reportedly converting its OLED line to produce low-temperature polycyrstalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) in the next three months.

UBI Research claims that Samsung Display's A3 factory line has been manufacturing low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT OLED panels. This is set to change as Apple plans to introduce 120Hz refresh rates for the iPhone 13 Pro models. LTPO TFT is more power efficient, which will help minimise the impact on battery life. Apple has been using LTPO TFT displays on the Apple Watch Series 4/5/6 and it is only a matter of time before future iPhones also use them.

While Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier of LTPO TFT OLED panels, LG Display will continue to supply LTPS TFT OLED panels. Chinese firm BOE is also investing in equipment to build display panels for Apple, which is slated to begin operations in November.
