After many twists and turns over the past 12 years, we finally have an exact release date for Rockstar Games's Grand Theft Auto VI.

But the path remains rocky, even in the home stretch. Originally set for a fall 2025 release date, GTA VI is getting pushed back to May 26, 2026.

The announcement made by Rockstar Games was quite light on the details, including what exactly caused the delay. But it's not hard to guess why it happened, given the sheer size and scale of the upcoming title. Rockstar, on their part, stated that they needed the "extra time to deliver the level of quality" they want for the game.

The 2025 release window was originally announced in GTA VI's first (and so far only) trailer that came out in December 2023. However, there's been uncertainty about whether Rockstar was going to be able to meet that window, and that doubt seems to have been proven true. Give and take, though; after more than a decade of waiting, the finish line has never been clearer. If everything goes well, it'll hopefully stay that way.

Rockstar did state that they would be sharing more information soon regarding GTA VI. In case you missed the past few years of developments about the game, GTA VI is set to take place in Vice City, a locale that hasn't been featured since 2002's titular GTA: Vice City, and will feature a new duo as our protagonists in a more modernised, social media-savvy time setting.

GTA VI is still set to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and again, is coming on May 26, 2026.
