Facebook is developing its own OS to reduce reliance on Google's software.
According to The Information, development of the OS is being led by Microsoft veteran Mark Lucovsky who co-authored the Windows NT OS. While information on how the new OS could be used is scarce, it is noteworthy to mention that Facebook's Oculus and Portal devices currently run on a modified version of Android. Simply put, Google does have some control over Facebook's hardware.
“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Facebook’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth, told The Information. “We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”
The Information also corroborated an earlier report by Bloomberg that Facebook is designing its own processors. Other ambitious Facebook projects in the pipeline include a voice assistant powered by AI and technology that is capable of deciphering human thoughts.
