Facebook activates Safety Check tool in Nepal, will also match donations up to US$2 million
In light of the recent earthquake in Nepal, Facebook has activated its Safety Check tool to allow users to quickly check to see if their friends are alright. It will also match donations made to the International Medical Corps. via its Donate feature.

Over the weekend, Nepal was struck by a terrible earthquake that left entire villages flattened and triggered numerous avalanches. As of yesterday, it is believed that more than 4300 people have lost their lives as a result.
To help rescue efforts, Facebook has turned on its Safety Check feature in Nepal and in the neighboring regions of India, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
Safety Check was announced last October and allows users to quickly see if they have friends in an affected region. And if friends in the region logs in on Facebook, they are automatically marked as safe. This allows others to know that they are alright.
To further aid rescue efforts, Facebook has also announced that it will match donations made to the International Medical Corps. of up to US$2 million. Beginning yesterday, users on Facebook will see a message at the top of their News Feed with an option to donate to International Medical Corps.
