Acer has announced the Nitro 5 gaming laptop, just ahead of Computex 2017 in Taipei. The Nitro 5 is an entry-level laptop aimed squarely at mainstream audiences, so while it’s hardly the most powerful laptop around, it will help Acer assert itself in the larger budget gaming segment.

We first heard about the Nitro 5 during Acer’s huge product unveiling in New York back in April, but it wasn’t until now that Acer released details on the laptop’s specifications.

That said, the specifications are nothing to get excited about, but the Nitro 5 will actually be available with both Intel and AMD hardware. For starters, you can choose between a 7th-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU and an AMD FX, A10, or A12 APU

On the graphics front, you’ll have options for entry-level cards from both camps as well, including an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 550.

The display is a 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel IPS panel for wider viewing angles, which is pretty much the standard fare on gaming laptops today. That said, you won’t find luxuries like a 144Hz refresh rate or support for NVIDIA G-Sync.

The Nitro 5 also supports up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. In addition, you can add on a larger 2TB HDD if you require extra storage.

On top of that, the notebook features a single USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C port, one USB 3.0 port that supports power-off charging, and two further USB 2.0 ports. For display connectors, you get just the lone HDMI 2.0 output.

One thing that stands out is the design, which is a lot more aggressive and gamer-centric – just look at the red backlight and large exhaust vents – than its specifications would suggest. It’s by no means ostentatious, but it does fit into the new mold of budget gaming laptops that we’ve been seeing, such as the Lenovo Legion Y520.

Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on availability or price, but we’ll update when we know more.
