Apple has always touted the superiority of its products against the competition with the tight integration of hardware and software. And to that end, iPhones have typically reigned supreme in performance benchmarks and tests. However, a recent test conducted by PhoneBuff pitting the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra against the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max proved otherwise.

The speed test, which timed how long it took for each phone to open several apps and process the tasks, surprisingly saw the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra pulling ahead of the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max

The jaw-dropping moment came during video processing in LumaFusion, where iPhones typically dominate. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra was about 25% faster (or 6 seconds faster) than the iPhone 16 Pro Max in completing the task, which PhoneBuff calls "a pretty big deal".

Samsung continued to pull ahead in mobile games and entertainment apps and completed the first lap in 2 minutes and 18 seconds, 15 seconds ahead of Apple.

PhoneBuff credits Samsung's speed-blazing performance to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, a 40% larger vapour chamber, and an extra 4GB RAM (12GB in total).  On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max is powered by the A18 Pro chip which has just 8GB of memory.

That said, Apple will have a chance to reclaim its crown later this year with the iPhone 17 series. These phones are rumoured to feature vapor chamber cooling and the new A19 Pro chip that will be built on a more advanced process. Check out the PhoneBuff's video below for the full run-down of the speed test.
