We are almost halfway through 2025, and that means iPhone season is just months away.

This could be an exciting year for the iPhone because Apple is widely expected to give its lineup a shake-up with an all-new ultra-slim model that could be called the iPhone 17 Air.

Back in fall last year, a leaked memo from Apple’s hardware chief John Ternus described the iPhone’s current roadmap as the “most ambitious in the product’s history”. Since then, the rumours have been coming in thick and fast, and it can be hard to keep track of what’s what and what iPhone is coming when.

Recent reports from analysts now paint a clearer picture of what to expect. What’s significant and noteworthy is that Apple is said to be switching to a staggered release schedule next year. Word on the street is that Apple will release its “pro” models in the fall of 2026 and its basic models the following year in spring.

Here’s what Apple’s roadmap and release schedule will look like:

2025

  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max

1H 2026

  • iPhone 17e

2H 2026

  • iPhone 18 Air
  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone Foldable

1H 2027

  • iPhone 18e
  • iPhone 18

2H 2027

  • iPhone 19 Air
  • iPhone 19 Pro
  • iPhone 19 Pro Max
  • iPhone Foldable (2nd-generation)

Apple has kept to a fall release schedule since the iPhone 4S in 2011, so a staggered release schedule is a huge deal. Also notable is that it looks like Apple will release its first folding iPhone next year.

iPhone sales have remained relatively stagnant for the past few years, and with increasing competition from Chinese phone makers, Apple is clearly not content to sit still. A staggered release will allow Apple to keep the iPhone lineup feeling fresh and also allow it to focus its marketing efforts more efficiently.
