21 April 2023 update: LG Singapore shared the pricing of its 2023 TV models that are coming to Singapore. We've included the details at the bottom of this piece.
LG's CES 2023 OLED TVs get a major revamp, inside and out.
LG always brings its cutting-edge TVs to CES 2023 with much fanfare. This year is no different, with the brand making waves in its display manufacturing, and translating them into high-end TVs for the masses.
New to 2023 is LG’s refreshed Z3, G3, and C3 OLED evo series TVs. Together, they get higher brightness and colour accuracy with the help of a new processor – the LG α9 AI Processor Gen6.
LG α9 AI Processor Gen6
LG OLED evo TVs get the most upgrades this year.
The new Alpha processor confers perks through AI-assisted deep learning technologies, similar to what the α9 AI Processor Gen5 processor offered for the 2022 OLED TVs, but further enhanced in 2023's latest TV processor. Features include AI Picture Pro (for upscaling) and better dynamic tone mapping (for depth and detail). AI Picture Pro goes further by refining important objects shown on the screen to give them a more lifelike appearance (similar to Samsung TV's shape-adaptive light technology enhancement). TV audio also receives perks through AI Sound Pro, which now offers virtual 9.1.2-channel surround sound using the TV’s built-in speakers.
Overall, these AI enhancements sound great on marketing materials, but as per most AI enhancements, the returns aren't exactly as breathtaking as they sound. In fact, AI Picture Pro and AI Sound Pro have been around since the LG G1using the Alpha 9 Gen 4 AI Processor back in 2021. Of course, we crowned the LG G1 OLED TV as our winner for 2022, but it wasn't because of AI Picture Pro, and most certainly not for the AI Sound Pro. They are nice to have, but they aren't essential to the core experience of the TV.
Specifically for the new OLED evo G3 panels is LG’s Brightness Booster Max, an algorithm that increases the brightness on its 55, 65, and 77-inch models by up to 70% more in conjunction with the latest Alpha 9 Gen 6 AI processor. The algorithm ensures that brightness is controlled pixel-by-pixel to ensure sharpness and realism. This sounds promising, and we can't wait to try it.
One Wall Design leaves no gaps when an LG OLED evo TV is wall-mounted.
The new OLED evo TVs also improve their aesthetics with a seamless One Wall Design that lets these panels be wall-mounted with no visible gaps.
New WebOS to control your LG TV? Yessssss.
Another key improvement that cuts across all its smart TV models (not just OLED evo) is an updated version of WebOS (the name of LG’s proprietary TV navigation interface). It features a redesigned UI, along with a new Quick Cards feature that lets LG TV owners quickly jump into logically grouped categories of content (Home Office, Gaming, Music, Sports, etc.). The new operating system also takes in viewing histories and habits to create a more personalised menu for the user through AI Concierge feature.
Other perks to new LG OLED TVs across the board include pre-integrated support with DTS:X capable LG soundbars. Combining them unlocks the LG Wow Orchestra feature that produces “stronger, more immersive sound”, but LG was light on details in this aspect.
The 2023 OLED TVs this year also come with HDMI 2.1a compliant ports, which supports higher video resolutions and refresh rates (8K60FPS, 4K120FPS), 0.1ms response time for gamers, and features like Quick Media Switching Variable Refresh Rate (QMS-VRR) that eliminates the brief black screen moment when switching between sources connected to the TV.
More information, like the precise models announced and their prices, will come after the CES 2023 hullaballoo concludes.
